The department of Pediatrics is committed to providing a comprehensive program of training, service, and research in the field of pediatrics. Departmental responsibilities for pediatric teaching involve multiple levels from first-year medical students to post-residency trainees, both physician and allied health personnel.

Pediatric training encompasses all aspects of child life and health.

The basic philosophy of the pediatric teaching program is that every person in the medical and paramedical profession should have an understanding of the dynamic nature of growth and development from conception to maturity.

Teaching of medical students at all four levels must cover a number of subspecialty areas in order to provide a basic and comprehensive training in pediatrics. The department provides post-medical specialty training through the University of Hawaiʻi Pediatric Integrated Residency Program.

This clinical department is located at the Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children (KMCWC). The Staff offices are located on the 7th Floor of the Physician Office Building.

KMCWC is the only Children’s Hospital in the State and is learning site for all Pediatric education at the School of Medicine.  It is also the site for the Pediatric Residency based at the University of Hawaiʻi. It is also the training site for the Neonatal Perinatal Fellowship Program (Jointly sponsored by the University of Hawaiʻi and the Tripler Army Medical Center). It also is the Pediatric training sites for multiple Schools of Nursing, Respiratory Therapy and other ancillary medical professional training.

The Faculty of the Department is over 200 strong (both compensated and volunteer) and are responsible for curricular activities supporting Medical Students, Residents and Fellows. There is also significant clinical research and Quality Improvement work conducted by the faculty. Research support is with local fiscal support and through NIH funded grants.
